IBB Has Become An Institution, A Major Issue In Nigeria – Afegbua

Prince Kassim Afegbua

Prince Kassim Afegbua, a former Commissioner for Information in Edo State and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday said the role former Military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida played in Nigeria’s political history will be a subject of discussion for years to come.

Speaking with World Africa, Afegbua, who is the spokesman to the former leader who will be 80 on August 17 said there is no middle ground where the issue of IBB is concerned as either people love him passionately or hate him intensely.

For those faulting IBB’s statements on national issues, Afegbua said the former leader has i fundamental rights to air his opinions on the state of affairs of the nation as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic. That right, according to Afegbua cannot be taken away from him.

He said “IBB is a behemoth of some sort, who has combed the entire gamut of Nigeria’s political life in a manner that makes him the issue in Nigeria’s political and developmental discourse”.

“Easily understood and misunderstood, Babangida has grown to represent the positive and negative currents of Nigeria’s political adventure, with a larger than life image that is often viewed with a mythical candour.

“A lot of Nigerians would agree with me that IBB is not flippant with comments on public issues. When he is not talking, people read meaning to it. When he chooses to talk, people still try to decipher what could be his real intention. And each time he tries to express an opinion on an issue, you often hear his itinerant critics questioning his right to own an opinion.
